Having travelled throughout Greece for five years now we’re pretty hot on the best Greek island honeymoon destinations, and have a list we need to narrow down for when it’s finally our turn!

Greece just oozes romance and it would be hard to find a country more suited to honeymooners and lovers. It doesn’t matter what you enjoy doing as a couple, Greece will have it in bucketloads.

Think crystal clear waters, balmy summer days, cute family-run tavernas serving fresh homemade treats, friendly locals, boutique hotels with infinity pools overlooking the sea, olive groves, colourful villages, freshly caught fish…….I could go on forever but you get the idea.

Greece is paradise. And paradise is what everyone dreams of for their honeymoon.

But with roughly 6000 islands (yep, you heard me!) how on earth do you choose the best Greek island honeymoon destinations? That’s where we can help out.

Below is our list of best Greek islands for couples and honeymooners, that we’ve put together from exploring Greece for over 5 years. There are different islands for everyone, so we’ve tried to sum up the feel of the island and given some things you might want to do while you’re there.

We’ve also included the top honeymoon accommodation where we can, to help you find the perfect romantic place to stay.

Good luck narrowing it down! If you can’t, why not combine several islands and make a Greek island hopping route around some of your favourites?

The Best Greek Island Honeymoon Destinations In The Ionian

If you’re planning a trip to Greece then the Ionian is the greenest area of Greece, with tree-covered mountains and mostly calm, settled weather over the summer. It’s simply beautiful in the Ionian and thousands of sailors flock here every year because it’s one of the best places to spend the hotter months.

If you’re heading here on your honeymoon then you can’t go far wrong. We’ve visited nearly every island in the Ionian and all of them are spectacular, but there are a few that stand out if you’re looking for romance.

Below are our favourite five islands in the Greek Ionian for honeymooners, because they scream romantic holiday and have some perfect places to stay too.

Paxos

a view over the bay in paxos while on honeymoon in greece

Paxos is a dream island. The sea here is so blue it almost doesn’t look real and the little villages are perfect for long, balmy evenings in candlelit restaurants. If you’re looking to totally unwind on your honeymoon then head here.

One of our favourite places to explore was Lakka and we would highly recommend you base yourselves here. The ring-shaped bay is one of the most beautiful we’ve seen in all of Greece. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of the water!

The village has a reasonable range of bars and restaurants to choose from and some cute souvenir shops, and there are some lovely walks where you can find all the views.

If you’re looking for things to do other than relax in the shade and swim in the sea then you can plan some day trips from here. You can visit the stunning blue caves, similar to those in Zakinthos with water like you’ve never seen before.

You could get a little more adventurous and take a kayaking tour of some of the island. From the water is often the best way to see Greece, and this kayaking tour will ensure you experience the coastline in a unique way to make some fun memories with your loved one.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Paxos

The White Orchard Villa in Lakka is perfect for honeymooners to enjoy each others company in privacy. Beautifully furnished with a private pool, views, and some lovely outdoor seating areas, this is the kind of place you will dream of having yourself one day.

Paxos doesn’t have many hotels and the lack of high-rise all-inclusives adds to its charm. We highly recommend you embrace Greek living and opt for self-catering accommodation like White Orchard Villa. You can buy locally sourced food and cook together in the outdoor oven, or dine out every night on Greek salads, moussaka and gyros.

The privacy of a villa over a hotel gets our vote every time.

Kephalonia

a beautiful beach in kephalonia

Kephalonia was the first Greek island Adam and I visited together and it was one of the most romantic holidays we’ve been on. The views are insane, the weather is perfect, the people friendly and the sea warm. There isn’t much Kephalonia doesn’t have!

If you want to see the best of the island then we highly recommend you book a car or join a few tours of the area. You can find the best deals at Discover Car, or we’ve linked some incredible tour options. Most places are a day trip away, and there are a few places you must see on your honeymoon.

  • Myrtos Beach, Assos & Fiskardo – Assos is simply stunning. Fiskardo is the place to go for yacht-watching. Myrtos Beach is iconic. See these three must-visit spots in one of the best Kephalonia day tours.
  • Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake – This is one of the most romantic spots in Kephalonia. When you see the shade of blue you’ll understand why.
  • Sailing trip – There are few things more romantic than a sailboat, and few places more romantic than a Greek island coastline. Combine the two for pure magic.
  • Explore Lixouri. This pretty town is just a short hop from Argostoli and very rarely busy.

If you want to combine your trip here with another Greek island then Zakynthos is just next door and equally as beautiful. You could spend 3 days in Kephalonia and 4 in Zakynthos to get a taste for each island.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Kephalonia

F Zeen Kefalonia has all the feels of a Bali villa with the beautiful greenery and subtle decor. The adult-only boutique hotel is a short walk from Lourdas Beach and village and boasts three pools, a gym, yoga classes daily and it’s own spa.

Book one of the rooms with a private pool that looks out onto the sea for true luxury. The perfect place to sip champagne together as the sun sets and the many stars come out.

Meganisi

meganisi island with sailboats in the distance. The perfect view for a greek island honeymoon

Meganisi is bang smack in the middle of the Ionian, and yet it has a much quieter feel than some of the bigger islands. Perhaps because it’s slightly more complicated to reach some people are put off. The crowds here mostly come from people visiting by boat, so accommodation can be quieter and cheaper too.

Meganisi is a favourite among cruisers for a reason – it’s beautiful. Head here if you want to feel like you’re getting a little away from the traditional Greek islands like Kephalonia and Zakynthos but you still want beautiful beaches, traditional Greek towns, and sea views.

Meganisi is relatively small so you won’t feel under pressure to cram too much into your stay. There are some lovely walks around the island, or you can explore the town of Vathy. Or just head to one of the many beaches for relaxing days in the sun and swimming in the clear waters.

You can reach Meganisi by ferry from the popular tourist town of Nydri in Lefkada. It only takes half an hour or so.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Meganisi

We wouldn’t normally recommend big hotels but Azur Retreat has all the feels of a private villa with all the convenience and luxury of a stylish hotel.

You’ll be overlooking the sea near the pretty little town of Vathy, but far enough away to have a secluded feel.

At the hotel there is an outdoor swimming pool and fitness centre along with a restaurant and bar. The swimming pool is lined with day beds so you can cuddle up in the sun while you look out over the sea. But the real selling point here is the rooms (because let’s face it, you’ll probably be spending some time there too!)

Make sure you book a room with a private pool so you have your own little private oasis. Imagine taking a dip in the morning while you watch the sun rise, or eating your breakfast with that view!

Zakynthos

a girl sailing through the blue caves in zakynthos in a dinghy as the sun is setting

Adam’s parents spent their honeymoon in Zakynthos many years ago and it’s still one of the top honeymoon islands in Greece today. Think bright blue waters, incredible beaches, turtles, dolphins and Greek tavernas. Who wouldn’t want to honeymoon here.

If you’re having trouble choosing between here and Kephalonia then you can always base yourself on one island and take a day trip to the other, or split your time between the two. They’re just a short ferry hop away from each other.

But you’re going to have plenty to do on the island of Zakynthos if you’re the kind of couple who can’t sit still.

The reason everyone visits Zakynthos and the number one thing to do, even if you do nothing else your whole honeymoon, is to visit the blue caves and shipwreck beach. The two are really close by so you can combine them in a day trip (this one has the best ratings, we highly recommend booking before you go through a reputable tour operator like Get Your Guide or Viator).

The blue caves are simply stunning and although they do get a little busy, they’re popular for a reason. Adam and I have travelled all over Greece and rarely seen water as blue. Shipwreck beach is the poster picture for Zakynthos and is pretty awesome. You’ll want to climb the cliffs next to the beach for the best views.

Turtles are the most amazing creatures, and holding hands as you swim beside one is a real bucket list memory. Take a trip to turtle island to try and spot these elusive sea animals.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Zakynthos

Lesante Blu is one of the most exclusive adult-only beach resorts on Zakynthos. You’ll find everything you could dream of in this honeymoon accommodation – a private beach, infinity pools, a spa, 2 restaurants and tennis courts.

It’s actually quite uncommon for rooms in Greece to have a bathtub but many of the rooms here have them, some even have spa tubs. I can’t think of anything better than a long soak in the bath overlooking the sea!

Book the honeymoon suite or the royal grande suite for pure luxury.

Ithaki

Most people choose to base themselves in neighbouring Kephalonia but don’t be too quick to follow the crowds. Ithaki is the perfect Greek island for a honeymoon because it’s beautiful but also more secluded than some of the bigger islands nearby.

There are some pretty villages to explore. Try Kioni for a super romantic place to spend the day, with it’s cute little shops, perfect beach and lovely walk to the windmills on the hill. Vathy is also lovely and the perfect place for a taverna lunch overlooking the harbour.

Another great thing to do on the island of Ithaki is explore the beaches, some of which you’re almost guaranteed to have all to yourselves. Or if you’re keen to stay active while you’re away then there are some great hiking routes around the island too. Most of them with stunning sea views and the option for dips in the sea to cool off along the way.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Ithaki

Book a stay at Villa Terra Promessa for a real Greek luxury experience. This villa is perfect for a honeymoon in Greece, with it’s stunning architecture and infinity pool with sunset views over the sea.

The beach is just 10 minute walk away and the villa boasts the most incredible views. You’ll feel like you have the place all to yourself. Total privacy on your honeymoon should be a must!

Ithaki is a small island so it won’t matter too much that you’re tucked out the way. You’ll still be able to reach the villages and towns to dine out, or just buy fresh Greek ingredients and cook at home together.

The Best Greek Island Honeymoon Destinations In The Cyclades

boats in a bay in one of the best greek island honeymoon destinations: the cyclades

The Cyclades is home to some of Greece’s most famous islands, like Santorini and Mykonos. But did you know it’s also full of other beautiful islands that are just as perfect, if not more perfect, than beautiful Santorini?

In fact, a lot of our list of best islands of Greece are in the Cyclades.

The Cyclades is where you’ll find picture postcard Greece, with white-washed houses and blue-roofed churches. It’s got a charm of its own that you won’t find elsewhere.

If you have time then you might want to consider spreading your time out a little to experience more of what the Cyclades has on offer. You can ferry hop between islands using Ferry Scanner really easily, and usually pretty quickly too. So you could split your time between one of the popular islands like Santorini and one of the quieter ones on this list.

You should also bear in mind that the Cyclades experiences the Meltemi winds over the summer months, which can be welcome to cool you down on hot days but does also make evenings colder, and dips in the sea a little chillier!

Milos and Kimolos

the white cliffs of milos

Milos is one of the most romantic islands we’ve visited in Greece, and convenient if you’re flying into Athens too as it’s just a short ferry hop over.

If you’re looking for things to do here then number one on your list should be a sailboat trip to the white cliffs. The arches are spectacular and the water is the most inviting after a sail over. You can book a private boat with your own skipper to sail you there for the ultimate romantic experience.

If you don’t fancy taking to the water then why not try wine tasting instead? Milos has some pretty family run vineyards that offer tours, and you can pick up a bottle or two to enjoy together back at your hotel too.

Base yourself on the larger island of Milos but make sure you find time to hop across to beautiful Kimolos. This island stole our hearts and is definitely worth a day of your honeymoon. Explore the village on the hill, sip cocktails as the sun sets, or spend the day sunbathing on the white rocks with the characterful colourful doors cut into the rocks.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Milos

Civitas Milos would definitely be my top pick if I was staying on Milos for my honeymoon. It’s close to the main town of Adamantas and several beautiful beaches, but yet tucked away enough that you’ll have peace and quiet for your romantic stay here.

The private pools attached to the rooms really do make this hotel. You can have a soak together after a day of exploring and unwind with incredible views. Or simply lie on the day beds and gaze up at the stars.

Astypalea

astypalea town while enjoying a greek island honeymoon

Astypalea might be our favourite island in the whole of Greece, and especially for couples or a Greek island honeymoon. It’s like a little hidden gem among some of Greece’s most popular islands.

Astpalea has the same white washed houses on a hill as Santorini. It has incredible sea views from almost every direction. It has some of the best beaches, complete with sea swings and chilled beach bars. It has day trips to sand bars with the whitest sand and the bluest sea. I can’t think of anything bad about it!

All this, and yet hardly anyone visits. Run, don’t walk, to this untapped honeymoon island in Greece!

Here are a few things we would recommend doing while you’re here. Also, check out how few reviews the trips get…..that’s because NO ONE VISITS!

  • Walk to the top of the chora to explore the castle at sunset and just check out those views! We had the castle all to ourselves in the height of summer. Totally crazy.
  • Take a private boat trip to the stunning sand bars nearby. Spend the day swimming in the clearest waters you’ve ever seen, sunbathing on deck and sipping refreshments. If you’re not bothered about sharing the experience you can save money by booking a group tour here, but make sure you see it either way! It’s paradise.
  • Enjoy a cocktail while looking out at the traditional Greek windmills and down to the harbour below.
  • Pick a beach and simply relax. There are quite a few to choose from. If the winds are up then try the southern beaches which will have more protection.
  • Pack a snorkel and swim with the fish. Astypalea had some of the best underwater life we’ve seen in all of Greece. We spotted octopus, schools and fish, and even our first and only slipper lobster.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Astypalea

Panoramic views of the sea from your private pool and just a short walk into one of the prettiest towns in Greece. If this sounds like your kind of honeymoon then you have to book Oneiro Luxury Suites.

Rooms are minimal and fresh and scream luxury. The hosts are friendly and accommodating. But the private pools and hot tubs with fantastic views are what really sells this place.

Book the junior suite with pool to get the best apartment!

Paros

the white washed houses of paros island in greece

Paros, and Naousa especially, is playground to the rich and famous. You’ll spot countless super yachts anchored out in the bays around this island, and find restaurants and bars to match the expensive feel.

I don’t think we’ve ever seen so many super yachts in one bay before!

Naousa was really beautiful and what we would call traditionally beautiful. Think white cobbled alleyways, bright pink foliage popping out of every corner and the cutest inviting cafes and tavernas spilling out onto the streets. It’s the perfect Greek island honeymoon destination.

Paros is kind of bang smack in the middle of the Cyclades which actually makes it the perfect place from which to explore multiple different islands. Or if you’re keen on pure relaxation you can do that in spades here too! Just head to one of the many, many beaches, set up your picnic and dig out your book.

For those that get restless legs like Adam and I, try out the sea kayaking tour along the coastline. We can’t think of a better way to see Greece than from the sea, and this gives you the opportunity to take in the little bays and cliffs you just can’t see from on land.

If you’re getting tired of the beach then make sure you explore the mountain village of Lefkes. This little village is what we imagine Greece was like many years ago. A beautiful little slice of traditional life with the most amazing views.

You’ll also find some great day trips on offer making Paros perfect for a longer stay. Here are a few great options if you’re looking for day trips from Paros. We HIGHLY recommend a day trip to Delos.

  • If you book one day trip make it this one. A full day trip to Delos and Mykonos. Delos is one of the most special places we’ve visited in all of Greece. What’s more romantic than a whole island of ancient Greek history and views for days?
  • You don’t need to stay in Santorini to enjoy this romantic island. Get the best of both worlds and book a boat trip here for the day.
  • Some people think Anti Paros is even more beautiful than Paros. Find out whether or not you agree and take a boat trip to this beautiful little island.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Paros

Located by the sandy beach of Naoussa, Lilly Residence Boutique Suites won honeymoon hotel in Naoussa in 2023 for a reason!

Hermes® bathroom amenities, ultra silent air conditioning, spa baths and fresh water pools, it’s all in the little details, and Lilly residence is oozing with them.

A champagne buffet breakfast with a wide variety of local products is served daily at the sun terrace, by the pool. If you even want to leave your bed with a view that is! The diamond suite with heated plunge pool and spa bath gets our vote!

For more options check out the best places to stay in Paros.

Santorini

a view over santorini island

The Greek honeymoon island of dreams.

If you asked a room full of people who had never been to Greece what they thought was the most romantic island we bet most of them would say Santorini. But is Santorini worth it?

We have to be honest, it probably wouldn’t be our first pick (though it is stunning, romantic, incredible and all the other words people use to describe it). It’s just way too busy for us. But you shouldn’t let that put you off if Santorini is your dream honeymoon destination, because it is absolutely beautiful.

We’ve written a lot about Santorini because it’s one of the places we get asked about the most. If you are heading there for your honeymoon then you should try and fit in at least one of these once in a lifetime experiences while you’re there.

Santorini helicopter ride

Do we need to explain this one further? The views are insane, and you’ll feel VERY cool taking a helicopter ride in Santorini for your honeymoon. This really is a once in a lifetime experience that you’ll be talking about for years to come.

Black sand beaches

Santorini is famous for them and some of them are spectacular. You should try and visit at least one black sand beach in Santorini while you’re here.

Couples photoshoot

Santorini is one of the most picturesque islands in the world. Let the professionals take you to all the best spots and get you in all the best poses with a photo shoot in stunning Santorini.

Catamaran cruise

We might be a bit biased but catamaran is by far the best way to travel in Greece, and there aren’t many things more romantic than lying on the trampolines at sunset with a glass of something bubbly in your hand. There are lots of options out there, but our favourite romantic Santorini catamaran cruise might be a sunset one.

Consider how many days you spend in Santorini. You might want to combine your stay with a trip to one of Greece’s quieter islanfds to get the best of both worlds. We reckon 4 days in Santorini is just about perfect.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Santorini

It’s a bit of challenge picking the best honeymoon accommodation on Santorini, as it’s basically what the island is designed around. Saying that, I think we’ve found it with Nefeles Luxury Suites.

You’re going to have a tough job choosing a room though, as they’re all spectacular and all come with unique features you’re going to lust after. What about your very own cave pool in your room? Your own infinity pool? A river pool? The list goes on!

Plus it’s in an ideal location close to all the action.

Kythira

I’m not sure whether Kythira is technically part of the Cyclades or the Pelopenesse, but what matters is that it’s beautiful and should be considered for a honeymoon in Greece!

We weren’t actually going to stop in Kythira but bad weather forced us here and I’m so glad it did because it’s beyond beautiful. If you’re after a Greek island honeymoon destination that not many people know of then this could well be the best choice.

There’s not masses to do on this little island. It’s definitely the place to go for some serious R&R. But there are some great hikes to pretty hilltop villages and the coastline is spectacular. Make sure you walk up some of the hills to get the best views over to the island of AntiKythira where the antikythira mechanism was discovered.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Kythira

You’ll want to book Mr. Bliss for your honeymoon on the Greek island of Kythira. It’s simply beautiful.

Enjoy the year-round outdoor pool with a barbecue in the evening. Soak in the sea views. You can take yoga classes held at the house or book onto nearby walking tours or snorkelling trips.

Or don’t do anything other than relax in each other’s company in the beautiful Greek sunshine! Once you see this place you probably won’t want to leave much!

The Best Greek Islands For Honeymooners In The Dodecanese

If someone forced me choose my favourite area of Greek islands I would probably have to say the Dodecanese. These islands are quieter than some areas of Greece, they’re mostly out of the way of the meltemi winds and they stay hotter later into the year.

If you’re planning a honeymoon in October or November time then book to stay on an island in the Dodecanese for the best chance of sunny, warm weather. We were swimming without wetsuits into November (though it was getting a little nippy!)

Sailing the Dodecanese is amazing too, so if you’re into boats then consider chartering one here.

Here are our favourite islands for romance in the Dodecanese.

Symi

symi island in greece. The perfect honeymoon destination

Just a short ferry hop from busy Rhodes is the colourful, hillside town of Symi, one of the best beach towns in Greece. We thought we’d seen all the pretty white-washed towns and villages there are in Greece but typical to this ever-changing country, Symi was a huge surprise.

You won’t find the tradition white and blue here, instead a beautiful mix of pastels and dull reds and yellows adorn the hill that the main town sits on. It really is captivating, and you’ll want to spend a large amount of time just sat in tavernas by the harbour side admiring the colourful show.

Symi is an island that most people explore as a day trip from Rhodes, so to stay here is kind of special. Even though it’s incredibly beautiful it’s not quite as busy as its much larger neighbour.

The main thing to do here is explore the super pretty town, but there are also some fantastic beaches and a few cultural things you can do too. Symi is also known for its hiking trails and if you’re visiting in the shoulder seasons make sure you bring your trainers. During the summer months it’s hot, hot, hot here so if you do plan on walking make sure you’re well prepared with plenty of water and layers.

Check out the best things to do in Symi to help you decide whether this is the Greek honeymoon island for you.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Symi

If you’re looking for high-rise hotels then Symi is not the Greek island for your honeymoon. Here you will find traditional guest houses with charm and welcoming hosts.

Kaminos Boutique Hotel is a great compromise between a pretty, characterful Greek guest house and a luxury hotel. The rooms here are sleek and tasteful, with beautiful little touches to add luxury like the stone showers. The staff are extremely helpful an friendly, ensuring you have a special stay.

You can book a room with a huge spa tub if you want to make your stay extra special.

Rhodes

a view over the sea from the island of rhodes

Rhodes is the perfect island for honeymooners who want a bit of everything. It’s a big island and there’s a real mixture of things to do here.

Rhodes old town is bursting with history and you could easily spend days exploring the pretty alleyways and hidden tavernas. Lindos has some lovely beaches, a stunning ancient temple and views to impress. There’s also a range of watersports you can get stuck into if you’re feeling more active.

If you have the time make sure you take a day trip to the island of Symi which has a totally different feel but is equally as romantic.

We found one of the most romantic things to do in Rhodes was to dine in a rooftop taverna in the town of Lindos. The views after dark with soft lights twinkling and the moon reflecting in the sheltered harbour are breathtaking and the perfect way to end a day in the sun.

If you’re looking for a bit more adventure then check out these top things to do.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Rhodes

If you’re sold on Rhodes for you honeymoon then book into Caesars Gardens Hotel & Spa. This adults only hotel is a little oasis of tranquility set in beautiful, cool gardens. Just what you want to come home to after a day of exploring in the Greek sunshine.

We love the decor here. It’s got boho vibes that make you want to kick back and relax, and yet it still manages to feel luxurious. The restaurant serves delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and you should definitely try out the spa together.

The executive suite and Meditteranean bungalow both have private pools to die for.

Samos

pretty cobblestoned paths on the island of samos

Samos stole our hearts with it’s vibrant and artsy feel. We haven’t found another Greek island like it and it definitely makes the list for the best Greek island honeymoon destinations.

With it’s own airport it’s a bigger island than you might think and there are lots of things to do here if you’re feeling active. Or of course the beaches are perfect for spending the whole day relaxing on.

Potami beach is beautiful, and you can visit the nearby waterfalls too. Lemonakia beach is another you should try and find to visit.

And one of our favourite places on the whole of Samos was Kokkari village. It’s a really charming little cluster of houses and tavernas with a mountain backdrop and pretty pebble beach. We ended up staying here longer than planned because we loved it so much!

If you want to take a day trip then seeing the island by boat is a must, and most boat trips will include a trip to the beautiful nearby island of Samiopoula. This tour is highly rated and includes a beach BBQ lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Samos

Check out the pool at Casa Cook Samos. This 5* adults-only hotel on the island of Samos has everything you could want for your honeymoon. A beautiful outdoor swimming pool, fitness center and garden, a restaurant and bar, and a Turkish bath.

Rooms are minimalist and luxurious with high-quality linens and towels. You can choose between a room with sea, garden or pool access. Or opt for the suite with a private pool. You are on your honeymoon after all!

Kalymnos

a beautiful bay with a sailboat in the middle of it

Kalymnos is better known among the climbing community but it’s also a beautiful place for a honeymoon. It’s a quiet Greek island with lots of natural beauty.

We spent a lot of time exploring hidden beaches down little trails that no one else was on. Having a beach all to yourself never gets old, especially when the water is the bluest you’ve ever seen.

If you’re here for your honeymoon then we’d recommend hiring a car and getting off the beaten track a little for some privacy. There are so many cute spots to explore and the only way to find them is to just pick a direction and drive!

Being a climbers paradise means there are also great walking trails around the island, and Kalymnos is a divers hang out too with some great dive companies waiting to take you to the best spots around the island. If you’re the kind of couple that can’t keep still then Kalymnos might be the perfect Greek honeymoon island for you!

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Kalymnos

Offering straight views of the Aegean Sea, Petra Boutique Homes are just a short walk from the beach and perfect for honeymooners looking for a home away from home (with a little luxury thrown in).

Each home has a little kitchen so you can enjoy private breakfasts on your own terrace. You can even opt for a suite with your own private pool! There is also a fireplace in the living room for cosy evenings during the shoulder season.

Patmos

a girl sat looking out at a sea view on her honeymoon in Greece

The main reason people visit the island of Patmos is because of its religious significance. There are several really important Christian sites here, and many Greeks visit as part of a pilgrimage.

You might not be here only to pray, but luckily Patmos has more to offer than impressive historic and religious landmarks.

Patmos is well known for being a hikers paradise with some excellent walking trails around the island. Some of these trails stop at different sites of interest, some stop at different beaches, and all of them have amazing views.

If you’re not here to get energetic then not to worry, the beaches here are beautiful too. Plus they’re more likely to be quiet than some of Greece’s more popular islands.

Patmos hasn’t lost it’s local charm, and its very possible that you’ll be walking along to beach and find a farmers shop selling homemade produce, wine, or honey. We picked up a bottle of wine made on site and it was some of the best we’d had in Greece!

Best Honeymoon Hotel On Patmos

Built right above Loukakia Beach in Patmos, the stone-built Eirini Luxury Hotel Villas all have balconies overlooking the Aegean sea. You won’t find many commercial hotels on the small island of Patmos, but instead it’s best to opt for boutique accommodation like Eirini.

Staff here go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. You can tuck into breakfast served pool side, or enjoy some privacy and book a suite with a private pool or hot tub instead. Each room is cosy and charming, and exactly what you’re going to be after for a honeymoon stay.

Frequently Asked Questions On The Best Greek Island Honeymoon Destinations

These are some of the questions we get asked about the best honeymoon islands in Greece.

Best Way To Get Around Greece On Your Honeymoon

Greece is actually a huge country, with a lot o it being sea. The bestway to get around might not be quite the same as your usual holiday in Europe. Having travelled extensively throughout Greece here is what we’ve learnt.

Make use of ferries

The islands in Greece are well connected, usually by ferry. They aren’t usually too expensive, especially if you’re just doing short hops.

We use Ferry Scanner to find the best routes and deals.

Hire a car

Car hire in Greece is often easy and affordable. Roads here tend to be fine, though you will find the odd random dirtroad leading to a beach or small village. Hiring a car is the best wayto find private beaches.

We use Discover Car to find reliable car hire in Greece

Use tours

Sometimes the best way to get around is by using a tour company. You can do things like hire a private boat to visit a place of interest that isn’t on the large ferry routes, or get to a historic site easily and cheaply. Tours are the least hassle so might be the best option while you’re on honeymoon.

We use Get Your Guide for most of our tours in Europe

Which Part Of Greece Is Best For A Honeymoon?

a pretty seaside town in greece

You can’t go far wrong with anywhere in Greece, but I guess you were hoping for a more specific answer so we’ll do our best!

Alongside the Greek islands you should consider stopping even for just one day in Athens. There is so much to see and do here and many claim it’s one of the most romantic cities in the world.

Beach lovers

Greece doesn’t actually have that many sandy beaches, but it does have some really stunning ones that you’ll probably have all to yourself.

In our opinion you’ll find the best beaches in the Dodecanese. Here the water is insane on almost every island and a lot of the beaches are bright white pebbles making for the best pictures.

It isn’t as busy here as In the Cyclades and Ioonian so if you’re willing to explore a little you’ll almost certainly find a beach all to yourself. Adam and I have had our own beach in the Dodecanese more times than I can count and every single time I had to pinch myself. What could be more romantic than a private beach in Greece?!

Adventure lovers

If you’re keen on exploring all the great outdoors has to offer together then the Cyclades is probably the place to go. Here you’ll find some pretty incredible hikes, varied landscapes and some awesome activities on and below the water.

The Cyclades experiences the Meltemi winds in the summer months so you’ll have a cooling breeze to help you out if you’re doing anything physical. Greece can get crazy hot so you’ll find a bit of wind very welcoming.

The wind also means you’ll be able to try out some adrenaline-pumping activities like windsurfing and kite surfing.

Water lovers

It kind of depends what you like to do in the water, so I’ll break it down a little.

If watersports are your thing then you have the best chance of good wind and waves in the Cyclades and Dodecanese in the summer months when the Meltemi wind often blows. There are some pretty well-renowned kite surfing beaches in Rhodes for example.

For sailing, you might be better off heading to the Ionian. The winds are a little calmer and more predictable and you have more islands closer together to explore. Swimming and paddleboarding are also better in the Ionian because you’re far more likely to find calm, flat seas.

If you’re into diving then there are various dive spots dotted all around Greece. You might want to plan your honeymoon around a specific dive spot.

Luxury lovers

Hopefully you are seeking a little luxury on your honeymoon in Greece. If you can’t splash out now then when can you!?

Luckily you’ll find luxury all over Greece, as it does have a reputation for being the perfect country for honeymoons and romantic retreats.

If you’re after 5* hotels then base yourself on one of Greece’s larger islands as you’re more likely to find boutique hotels that cater to adults only. The smaller islands in Greece tend to have a wider range of BnB-type accommodations or self-catering stays.

These can be equally as luxurious, especially when you see the sea view pools, BBQ areas and master bedroom balconies! But it’s worth bearing in mind that the smaller islands tend to shy away from big complexes and high-rise hotels.

What Is The Most Romantic Island In Greece?

If only there was just one romantic island in Greece. It would make life a lot easier right?

Unfortunately, this question (that we get asked all the time!) is pretty impossible to answer, because it totally depends on what you’re after as a couple.

Santorini has the reputation of being up there in the list of best honeymoon islands in Greece. It’s definitely beautiful enough. But for us it wouldn’t be our top choice because of the crowds. We would much rather honeymoon in private (or at least away from the masses!).

For quiet beauty compatible with Santorini head to one of Greece’s less well-known islands in the Cyclades like Astypalea.

If you’re looking for luxury and expense then Paros with its super yachts draws quite the crowd.

Or rustic charm, try somewhere like Paxos or Patmos.

Honestly though, all of the above islands will have romance in bucket loads, and just about every other Greek island you can reach!

Which Greek Island Is Best For A Quiet Honeymoon?

Our kind of honeymoon!

Greece is a popular holiday destination so you’re unlikely to find an island that doesn’t have tourists. But you can avoid some of the super busy islands like Santorini and Mykonos.

Our top picks for Greek islands for a quiet honeymoon would be Astypalea, Paxos, Patmos and Kalymnos.

Quiet Greek islands tend to be a little harder to reach, but totally worth the extra hassle.

If you’re up for branching out then why not consider a Greek honeymoon on the mainland? Monemvasia and Kyparrisia are among countless beautiful destinations along the mainland coast that don’t get nearly enough attention.

When Should I Honeymoon In Greece?

The best time to visit Greece rides a lot on personal preference. As a basic rule, Greece overthe summer months of June, July, August and September is hot. Sometimes reaching 40 degree heat.

The shoulder seasons of Spring and Autumn tend to be sunny still with the odd thunderstorm and rainy day, but a little cooler.

Winter, November-February, is very variable. Sometimes you get days of rain and freezing cold (the mountains often get snow in some regions) and some days you could sunbathe on the beach!

Is Greece Worth It For Your Honeymoon?

YES!

Well that was an easy one to answer!

Seriously though, we can’t think of many places more perfect for a honeymoon. Greece has everything. The beaches, the history, the towns, the weather. The islands we’ve listed are honestly the most perfect Greek island honeymoon destinations.

And the best thing is that you could visit every island in Greece and find something different, unique and totally captivating so you can spend as long as you like here and never get bored.
